Welcome fall! Essential skin care tips for cooler weather

Ava Bella estheticians offer tips for fall skin care

As autumn sets in, the crisp air and vibrant foliage bring a reminder that change is in the air — not just for your wardrobe, but for your skin care routine too. Cooler temperatures and lower humidity levels can leave skin feeling dry, tight, and lackluster. To keep your skin glowing and healthy, a seasonal update to your regimen is essential. Below are some practical tips that can give you the perfect fall refresh.

  • Switch to a creamy or hydrating cleanser As the air becomes drier, gentle hydration is key. Replace your summer gel or foaming cleanser with a cream-based formula to prevent stripping your skin's natural oils. Look for ingredients like glycerin, ceramides, or hyaluronic acid for added moisture.

  • Incorporate a richer moisturizer Trade lightweight lotions for thicker creams that can lock in moisture. Nighttime is especially important for skin repair, so opt for a night cream with nourishing ingredients like shea butter, squalane, or peptides.

  • Use a humidifier Indoor heating can zap moisture from the air (and your skin). Running a humidifier while you sleep or work can help maintain hydration levels and keep your skin comfortable.

  • Don’t skip sunscreen Even though the sun’s rays may feel less intense, UV damage is still a risk year-round. Continue to use a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher daily to protect against sun damage and premature aging.

  • Exfoliate, but be gentle Exfoliation helps to remove dead skin cells and prevent dryness. However, overdoing it in the fall can cause irritation. Limit exfoliation to 1-2 times per week and opt for a gentle chemical exfoliant, such as lactic acid or mandelic acid, which are less drying than harsher alternatives.

  • Add hydrating serums Layering a hydrating serum under your moisturizer can give your skin an added moisture boost. Look for serums with hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, or panthenol for soothing hydration.

  • Treat your lips and hands These areas are especially prone to dryness. Use a nourishing lip balm with beeswax or lanolin and apply a rich hand cream regularly, especially after washing your hands.
